Tybee Councilman Charlie Brewer wants a parking and traffic task force created to address the island’s growing traffic snarls and dearth of parking.
He gained a consensus from Mayor Jason Buelterman and fellow members to study establishment of a parking/traffic panel modeled after the Tybee Beach Task Force. Buelterman asked Brewer to report at the Oct. 2 meeting on the possible duration, makeup and mission of such a group.
Brewer said he wants to bring in Chatham County officials as well as representatives of Fort Pulaski and Lazaretto Creek area businesses as a way to develop a broader approach toward solving traffic and parking problems.
One strategy that could be considered is providing parking for Tybee visitors at Fort Pulaski and using shuttle buses to bring them to the beach, Brewer said.
A report on Tybee traffic prepared by Councilwoman Wanda Doyle could serve as a starting point for the work of the task force, council members agreed.
