Here’s the question: In the midst of Georgia’s worst economic crisis in 75 years  —  unemployment is at a record high, so are foreclosures  —  why would the governor of the Empire State of the South decide now is the best time to reorganize the state highway board?

January has got to be the most depressing month of the year. It’s usually stinky weather, and the over-indulgence of the holidays has come home to roost, both in the form of bills for the gifts we couldn’t resist and with tight pants, thanks to the eggnog or other rich, sweet treats that are ever-present from Thanksgiving until year’s end.

Most of us make personal declarations about changes we are going to make during this year to address the lack of financial and physical restraint we couldn’t muster in previous weeks. The gym will be packed with new disciples of fitness all decked out in recently purchased, form-fitting workout clothing (which can be a scary sight)! But usually the vows of daily workouts and rigorous diet plans fall to the wayside just in time for a large serving of nachos and other goodies at somebody’s Super Bowl party.

For the older and wiser – which I would like to be since there has got to be an upside to getting all that AARP correspondence—there’s a different approach to making “resolutions” at the start of a new year. I think I’ve found something that should be helpful to anyone like me who wants to be happier and healthier in 2009.
